There could be a few reasons as to why your toilet is draining slowly. A common reason is a clogged toilet – but not one that always overflows. 

If you flush the toilet and the water rises to the top but then gradually recedes over the next half an hour or so, it’s likely that you have a partial blockage. In some cases, a partial blockage can be unclogged by yourself. 

If it doesn’t work, then you’ll need to call a plumber as soon as possible. If left unaddressed, a partial blockage can become a full one and cause your toilet to overflow.

 Meanwhile, make sure that no one uses the toilet until the issue has been resolved.

If your toilet is blocked, the first thing you should do is check to see if the blockage is caused by human waste or toilet paper. If it is, it should breakdown quickly and you won’t have to worry about it. 

However, if the blockage is more stubborn, you may need to clear the drain externally and use a plunger to remove it. 

If the blockage is caused by a tree root, build up of wet wipes and toilet paper, or something else, you will likely require an electric drain cleaner or hydro jet drain cleaning machine to remove all offending material.

There are a few things that can cause a blocked toilet:

– Foreign objects: Most people know that the only things we should be throwing in a toilet are human waste and toilet paper. However, a staggering number of people like to use their toilet as a rubbish bin. (Dead Goldfish, Sanitary Napkin, Food waste are big No-no!  )

– Low flow: A low water flow can contribute to a blocked toilet. Some older model toilets can cause this issue. A low flow can potentially stop waste from being carried to the sewer system.

– Vent stack issues: A blocked drain can sometimes be caused by a lack of air and water.
